Run a Welcoming Comedy Night

A small showcase built around clear boundaries, new voices, and an audience that wants everyone to win.

What you need

Do it, step by step

  1. Choose the format

For the first event, curate six acts at seven minutes plus a host. Open mics require stronger moderation.

  2. Publish the room standard

No targeted harassment, slurs as attack, recording without consent, or crowd work that pressures disclosure.

  3. Book a varied lineup

Invite locally, state pay clearly, and reserve at least two slots for developing performers.

  4. Brief every act

Confirm pronunciation, intro, time signal, content boundary, access needs, and photo permission.

  5. Warm the audience

The host explains the room, models generosity, and gives permission to step out quietly.

  6. Keep time kindly

Give a one-minute light and end sets consistently. Never humiliate a performer for running long.

  7. Debrief privately

Ask performers and venue what worked. Address conduct issues without making them content.
